Surviving HIV/AIDS by staying positive with good nutrition
Being HIV-positive isn’t a death sentence. There’s a wealth of information to assist in living a full life with HIV/AIDS. But you must remain positive and remember that the virus isn’t in control—you are.
A very important step is to overcome the HIV/AIDS-related stigma, including discrimination, negative attitudes, abuse and maltreatment.
This may range from being shunned by family members or peers, or by succumbing to poor health treatment and psychological damage, and from ignorance projected toward you from others. Your self-love, faith and forgiveness will play a major role in living a full productive and healthy life.
You must come to terms with having the infection. You can’t live in fear of the progression of HIV/AIDS, the isolation from loved ones or continuous worry. Anxiety over the situation will only depress you, and you’ll need your energy for more positive activity. Let’s deal with managing the disease.
I’ve chosen to focus on diet and nutrition. My space is limited, but I desire to share some very important information. Nutrition is important for everyone, because food gives us the nutrients needed to stay healthy.
Foods are made up of six classes of nutrients, each providing what our bodies need: protein to build muscles and a strong immune system, carbohydrates and fats for energy, vitamins to regulate body processes, minerals to regulate body processes and make up body tissue, and water to hydrate cells that assist in all body functions.
HIV and nutrition are intimately linked. HIV infection can lead to malnutrition, and a poor diet can speed up the progress of the infection.
What causes weight loss in HIV/AIDS patients? No one quite knows, but studies have found that people with HIV tend to burn about 10 percent more calories while resting compared to uninfected people. People within whom the infection is advanced, or AIDS, expend even more energy. This causes lean tissue such as muscle loss. Weight loss can occur when the body is not able to absorb nutrients, particularly fats.
Unfortunately, knowledge of the effects of micronutrient supplements on people with HIV/AIDS is still sketchy, and the research hasn’t been a major priority.
The most interesting results have come from studies of vitamin A and zinc.
Vitamin A supplements have been found to reduce illness and death among African American children living with HIV. The World Health Organization recommends vitamin A supplements for all young children who are at high risk of vitamin A deficiency; this includes those born to HIV-positive mothers in resource-limited settings.
Some cases of zinc supplementation have shown a 60 percent reduced risk of diarrhea in HIV-positive participants of a study conducted over 18 months.
