Hair: the trauma of transitioning
After working as a stylist, I have come to realize that hair is the richest ornament on a woman. Not only is it an object of attraction and adoration that fuels a woman’s vanity, it is a reflection of her self-image and self-esteem. As the great clothing designer Hubert de Givenchy said in a 1985 interview with Vogue magazine, “Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself.”
Just one day in a salon will show critics of his statement that a woman’s hair is a tangled mystery of self-worth, particularly when she is transitioning to a new hairstyle.
More and more women have made the decision to transition from wearing their hair in a weave or a chemically straightened style to a natural style, be it an afro, braids, locks, natural curl or wavy and loose. Unfortunately, many women don’t prepare for what comes next. Their decision to transition to a “healthier you” can be a blow to their self-image and self-esteem.
After years of wearing their hair either in the media-glamorized image of a full flowing head of a long weave or in a chemically treated straightened style, women associate that look with their idea of sexy, beautiful, glamorous or even professional.
Then when the big chop comes—the execution of the flowing weave or the straightened hair—there is a serious emotional reaction. Some women are seeing their hair for the first time in years. Others have never really seen their face without cascading locks of straightened hair.
Trauma.
Suddenly her identity crisis turns the salon into a counseling session or a women’s support group: stylists huddled to encourage the woman that she is indeed beautiful. Other customers assure her, she’s made a good choice. But one look in the mirror shows her a reflection that isn’t what Hollywood or corporate America has defined as “beautiful.” Her bold blond ambitions or her black silver screen tresses are resting lifelessly on the floor along with her image.
Her silent scream of “Who am I?” fills the salon. Then comes the unsolicited confession: “I’ve never seen my natural hair since she I was a child. My parents have been straightening my hair ever since I can remember.”
I advise women to try on wigs and or cut out pictures of how they want to look. Discuss it with their spouses or loved ones, if they need to, but overall, view the journey from unnatural to natural as an eye-opening experience, a feeling of rebirth and renewal.
Will you look different? Yes. Will people object? Yes. But any decision to change you should be about self-empowerment. Your opinion really should be the only one that matters.
Our hair is tied into our image, which is tied into our self-esteem. If we don’t feel good about ourselves, then it can affect the way we perform and interact with others. So it’s very important that we are confident with our hair. Hair is a significant part of our identity. Don’t let others define your “hair identity.” Define yourself and then be confident and affirm that you love and approve of yourself.
