Whites still outlive Blacks
Homicide, health factors shorten African American life span
Heart disease and homicide have contributed to the shortened life expectancy of Black men, according to the San Francisco-based Public Policy Institute of California (CPPIC).
A CPPIC study reported that due to these factors, Black men live seven fewer years than White men. White men live an average of 75.5 years compared to 68.6 for Black men.
Accidents were the fourth-leading cause of death for African American men, and homicide was sixth. For Latinos, homicide was the seventh-leading cause of death, whereas for whites, it was 20.
The study also indicated that White women in California live an average of about five years longer than African American women due to the fact that Black women suffer from higher rates of diabetes and stroke.
The study also indicated that Asians and Latinos in California had higher life expectancies than Whites and Blacks.
Latinos had significantly longer life expectancies than African Americans, even though poverty rates for Latinos are similar to those of Blacks.
The data for the study was drawn from California death certificates from 2000 to 2002.
Dr. Robert Ross, president of the California Endowment, a private foundation devoted to health care solutions, said that the disparity in life expectancy between Blacks and Whites is “a pretty complicated soufflé of poverty and racism and education and health issues. The lion’s share of what explains health status and life expectancy has to do with non-healthcare factors. That’s when you get into the quality of the environment, poverty, racism and some messier factors.”
